The Picasso Collection Exhibition
Dates: Feb. 1 (Fri.) – Jul. 26 (Fri.) 2019
The Hakone Open-Air Museum possesses a collection of 319 works by Pablo Picasso. Centered around a group of ceramic works purchased from Picasso's daughter, Maya Picasso, it covers a wide range of genres including painting, sculpture, tapestry, gemmail, and gold or silver objects. The Picasso Pavilion first opened in 1984 and it is scheduled to reopen again after extensive remodeling in the end of July 2019.
Picasso always firmly believed that "Everything manifests itself in form,"* that the attraction of the form itself and the surprise or excitement derived from changes in the form, are what powered creative activity
In the works that comprise the museum's Picasso Collection, we are able to feel Picasso's endeavor to employ a variety of techniques to transform the image and discover unknown forms.

20th Century Sculpture Collection
- 7.8 (Sat)〜
The Hakone Open-Air Museum opened on August 1, 1969 as Japan’s first outdoor museum, with the aim of disseminating and promoting the art of sculpture.
From the time of its founding, the museum has also featured an indoor exhibition area attuned to the ever-changing mountain climate. This has enabled us to amass a collection of sculptures that can be exhibited indoors. Over the course of nearly half a century, and with the support of the Fujisankei Communications Group, we have built up a collection that provides a sweeping view of the history of 20th century sculpture.
In this exhibition we present some of the treasures of our modern sculpture collection, together with new acquisitions. We hope that visitors will take time to appreciate the intimate scale of these artworks and discover the innovative spirit of modernity.
In here, the purpose of our activities are to understand the sculpture more deeply and to have more fun appreciating the sculpture.
We analyze materials, forms and space of the sculpture in a variety of ways, and repeat studies everyday. We hope you will all enjoy deeply understanding about the sculpture by participating in the research too. And after researching please watch carefully "From the collection: Innovation Modern Sculpture" or sculptures in the open air. You all may discover a new side to the sculpture than before.
