Last Admission 16:30　Closing Time for the Light-Up Display Extended to 18:00

As we begin the countdown towards Christmas we are presenting the "Night at The Hakone Open-Air Museum" project that will run through the New Year holidays, featuring a special light-up display by Kyota Takahashi of the outdoor sculptures and main outdoor exhibition space.

Kyota Takahashi is an artist who explores the inherent possibilities of light through the manipulation of illumination and video. He is active in a wide range of fields, producing the "Gift for Frozen Village" work for the SNOWART project, which has been held annually at Echigo-tsumari since 2011, and the participation light-up project, "Hikari no Mi", in addition he has also undertaken commission works for the Towada Art Center (2008) and the Wacoal New Kyoto Building (2016).

This new project by The Hakone Open-Air Museum combines three elements: the Round Plaza, the Main Outdoor Exhibition Space and paper lanterns. The Round Plaza, which is situated just inside the museum entrance, is transformed into a fantastical place, sparkling with lights of various colors. This colored illumination spreads out from its source in the Round Plaza to the various sculptures, studding the entire Main Outdoor Exhibition Space with light. If you carry one of the paper lanterns that are provided as you explore the Main Outdoor Exhibition Space, you will find that it changes color in response to the color of the lighting on the various sculptures. As a result of this combination of light-up and lanterns, which have been designed by Kyota Takahashi, not only does the Open-Air Museum take on a completely different appearance to daytime, but also, through the participation of the visitors, it creates a unique, once-in-a-lifetime vista. It is a form of 'interactive light-up as art' that has never existed before now.

Although the museum generally closes at 17:00,this has been extended until 18:00! Applicable only for the light-up area for the duration of the event.
Visitors may participate in this event at no extra cost.
Please come and experience this form of light art that can only be brought about in an open-air museum.

A request to our visitors

• Lighting up areas are Round Plaza and Main Outdoor Exhibition Space.
• Lighting up areas are dark. Please watch your step.
• Please do not touch the pieces and lighting equipment.
• Please be aware the grass part forbidden.
• Please keep off except lighting up areas.
• Please return the lantern to Main Gallery by 18:00.
